Omega-6 fatty acid as linoleic acid (commonly found in plant/vegetable oils such as corn, safflower, sunflower and others) is regarded as an essential fatty acid for humans with recommended intakes in the range of approximately 1-2% of total daily energy intake (or somewhat higher) in some groups. The average intake of omega-6 fatty acid (predominantly as linoleic acid) is approximately 4-6% of total energy which amounts to 10-16g per person per day. Only a few isolated cases of omega-6 deficiency have been reported from North America in the medical/nutrition literature.
